Drug-Containing Layered Double Hydroxide/Alginate Dispersions for Tissue Engineering

Alginate (Alg) is increasingly studied as a constitutive material of scaffolds for tissue engineering because its easy gelation and biocompatibility, the incorporation drugs into formulation allows functionality to be extended. However, Alg presents low cell adhesion proliferation capacity, may further reduce biocompatibility. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) are promising fillers Alg-based biomaterials, they increase interaction provide drug storage controlled release. In this work, LDH containing ibuprofen or naproxen were synthesized by coprecipitation at constant pH their properties upon in dispersions (LDH-Drug/Alg) explored. Drug release profiles simulated body fluid pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells LDH-Drug/Alg then evaluated, leading results that confirm potential biomaterials engineering. They showed with diffusive control, modulated in-situ formation an hydrogel presence Ca2+ ions. Additionally, mitigated cytotoxic effects pure drugs, especially case markedly such naproxen.
